Top 4 Maintenance Tasks to Sell Your Home

When selling your home, it’s important to present it at its best. It’s not always possible (or necessary) to completely renovate your home before selling, but failing to do a few simple updates can make buyers feel like there’s too much work involved in your home and they will move onto the next listing. Here are some key updates you can make so buyers feel confident that they are getting a move-in ready home.

Update the Walls

Fresh paint is ALWAYS preferred, but updating walls doesn’t always mean you need a fresh coat. Cleaning the walls in the high traffic areas of your home can go a long way in refreshing the space - especially if you have pets or kids. Take a careful look at the walls, doors, and doorframes at your pet’s and kid’s height for scuffs and dirt. You might not have noticed it before, but cleaning up these subtle spots will go a long way in making your home appeal to buyers. I have found that Magic Erasers work wonders when it comes to removing dirt and scuffs if painting isn’t an option.

Clean the Air Vents and Lights

We all use our air vents every day (especially in this Texas heat!), but when was the last time you thoroughly cleaned your vents? Take the time to give them all a quick scrub - this detail might go unnoticed, but if dusty vents are noticed they can easily become a deterrent for a buyer. Similarly, lighting fixtures and ceiling fans can easily collect dust (and bugs - ew), and breaking out the ladder to give them a quick dusting can go a long way - and even make your rooms feel brighter and lighter! The cleanliness of your air vents and lights might also subtly speak to the cleanliness of the rest of the hard-to-reach areas of your home.

Fix Your Trim

Curb appeal is huge when selling your home, so paying attention to the details on the exterior of your home can make a big difference. An unpolished exterior can deter buyers. Paying attention to an exterior detail like the front door and trim can make your home look nicer and draw buyers inside. Your trim might need a fresh coat of paint, or there might be a few problem spots that need repairing. Fixing these issues can help the buyer see your home as move-in ready, rather than a potential fixer upper.

Deep Clean Grout

Like air vents and lights, the cleanliness of your grout can speak volumes to buyers. To get your grout looking as good as new, try using a mixture of vinegar and baking soda with a stiff brush. It may take a bit of elbow grease, but it can change the look of your tile floor, backsplash, or shower dramatically, especially if your grout’s original color is white!
